Inspiration for Blue

As I am very passionate about the script for Blue I wanted to look through some of my inspirations.

First and foremost is Submarine by Richard Ayoade. The film focuses on Oliver Tate, a boy who obsesses over a girl at his school Jordana. As the story progresses the two form an uneasy relationship consisting of visiting cold British beaches, industrial estates and a lot of pyromania. Oliver is a self-absorbed character with much of the film focusing on his thoughts and concerns, with some internal sequences where he is seen in a black void talking directly to the camera, and a section where he lays on a bed which is eventually imposed over an endless sea. Much of the imagery is to do with the sea, and the visuals are incredibly 'blue' and overcast reflecting the British setting. It is easy to draw comparison between my script and Submarine.

Second being a strange influence, but a large one none-the-less. Jaden Smith's SYRE is an incredibly reflective album looking back on Smith's past mistakes and forward to his future. It too is self-absorbed (as much of what Jaden Smith does is) and the first four tracks of the album spell out B-L-U-E letter by letter. The album itself is an eclectic mix of style and tempo, with tracks slowly changing as they progress from hardcore rap songs to gentle love ballads. The whole album reflects the idea of feeling blue, which is exactly what I want from my script. Also, the visuals in his music videos are pretty amazing.

My friend Luca has made a song for this script based on the whole vibe I want to go for in the film. I can't figure out a way to attach that here, but I love that too. It's similar to the music created by 'Vangelis' for 'Blade Runner' but a lot more bleak and uncertain.
I have also found inspiration in the various short films we have watched that feed into Blue. Overall, the closest link I feel is in the short- Arrival. As Blue primarily focuses on one character, and is rife with interior monologue it is already close in style to Arrival. Also the expressionistic train sequence in Arrival, with the blinking lights through the café windows created a similar feel I would like to in Blue, connecting emotion and inner turmoil with the environment and micro-elements.
In basic premise, Blue is similar to Slap in that it is a character study and is fairly open-ended with the ending not so much being an ending but more as a new beginning. It is also ambiguous in some ways (highlighted in my 'What Next' post).

It also indirectly plays into some aspects of Echo, in similar ways that it links to Slap, but I feel there is weaker connection to Echo than to slap. However, it does heavily borrow from Echo's disjointed narrative structure and distanced feel, especially at the beginning of Echo.
